EBA Summer/Winter Schools and other educational seminars

The EBA regularly organises educational seminars on payments-related topics. The main objective of this educational programme is to provide professionals with new insights into key business, technology and regulatory developments impacting the European payments industry.

The courses combine interactive group work with lectures and presentations delivered by academics and practitioners. The faculty at the EBA seminars includes senior experts from banks, universities, corporations, law firms, consultancies, or IT and infrastructure providers.

Each year, around 100 payment professionals attend the EBA’s educational programme, which is seen by many EBA Members as an integral part of the professional training and development they offer to their high-potential staff.

The EBA holds one Summer and/or one Winter School per year. Each is a two-day-long event with a pan-European scope and audience. EBA Summer and Winter Schools often include special visits to technology labs of leading payment solution providers.

The EBA Global Seminars usually focus on real-time payments and Open Finance. They serve as a high-level meeting point of senior managers to discuss, in depth, the strategic future of their businesses. The seminars take place annually and rotate between Asia, Europe and the US.

EBA Liquidity Management Seminars are shorter seminars which focus on certain aspects of liquidity management, such as intraday liquidity, corporate liquidity, liquidity and instant payments, and the wider liquidity ecosystem.

The seminars are tailored to transaction bankers and payment service providers working in areas such as liquidity management, payments operations, product management, sales, balance sheet management – and everyone who is interested in better understanding liquidity management today and in the future.

EBA Liquidity Management Seminars generally include a practical simulation exercise on the relevant theme or input by corporate speakers.

The EBA has also offered follow-up seminars on specific topics. These "alumni seminars" are exclusively catered to delegates of previous EBA educational events and pick up on the developments of topics discussed during earlier events.

Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

The European payments industry is undergoing significant change in terms of regulation, new technology and services as well as shifts in customer expectations. The EBA has recognised that there is a value in bringing together key players with different insights and perspectives and to provide an interactive environment where knowledge can be shared and further evolve. We believe that in this way we can provide added value to all our member organisations.

The programme differs in a number of important ways: Firstly, the events are designed as educational activities aimed at providing a more in-depth insight into key topics from both an academic and practitioner’s perspective. Secondly, whilst there is important input provided by keynote speakers, the programme also offers a range of syndicate working sessions where participants from diverse organisations can undertake exercises and debate the key current issues. It is this interaction and debate that delegates tell us they have found of most value and that sets these EBA events apart from other, more conventional seminars.

The EBA plans to organise three educational events in 2024: the EBA Summer School in July, the EBA Global Seminar in autumn, and the EBA Winter School in November 2024. Further information to follow.

To register an interest in our events, please contact us via  e-mail.

The programmes of EBA Summer/Winter Schools are aimed at payment practitioners with several years of professional experience who contribute to positioning and evolving their organisation in a changing environment within the European payments industry.

The EBA Global Seminars are tailored to senior managers who wish to discuss, in depth, the strategic future of their businesses.

Each event features 5-7 speakers from all over Europe.
The digital versions of the high-level EBA Global Seminar feature over 20 speakers.

In each EBA Winter or Summer School, we welcome between 25 and 40 delegates.

There is always plenty of opportunity for networking! Delegates are invited to arrive at the location the evening before the programme starts in order to meet with their colleagues. Throughout the following two days, apart from the opportunity to work with colleagues in formal sessions and syndicate groups, delegates also have several opportunities for informal networking during extended breaks and in the evening.

The official language of all events is English.

Participation in an EBA educational event

Yes. Before the event, you will receive an e-mail with a reading pack. Sometimes, additional hand-outs are distributed during the event.

Your performance will not be graded, but of course you will receive a personal certificate of attendance.

This depends on where the EBA Winter or Summer School is held. Please contact us directly if you would like to extend your stay.

An informal atmosphere is maintained throughout the event, therefore you should dress smart/business casual.

Yes – feedback from previous delegates suggests that it is helpful to have more than one person from the same organisation present, so that they can compare and contrast their learning and more effectively use this to influence the agenda of their organisation on return to the workplace.

There are vegetarian options available for every meal. If your dietary requirements entail other restrictions, please contact us directly. We will then try to arrange alternative meals for you.

Feedback on EBA educational events

Feedback from previous EBA Winter/Summer Schools and the one-day seminars has been consistently positive. After each event we invite all delegates to provide us with detailed feedback, which we use to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme and implement improvements to subsequent events.
